Background

Netflix's original business was renting DVDs by mail. It saw that the internet would change how people watch, and chose to build streaming even though it competed with its own DVD business.

The challenge

Streaming meant building technology that works on every device, scales to millions of viewers, and keeps people subscribed month after month.

What they built

  • Launched streaming in 2007 alongside its DVD service
  • Built apps for TVs, phones, tablets, consoles and browsers
  • Moved its technology to the cloud to scale worldwide
  • Used viewing data to personalise recommendations
  • Built a simple monthly subscription with easy sign-up

The results

At the end of 2024 Netflix had 301.63 million paid memberships. Revenue for the year was about $39 billion, and operating income passed $10 billion for the first time.
